Wacom Intuos 5 Pen Tablet

Wacom Intuos 5

At the NANPA Summit in Jacksonville, I was fortunate to sit in on a demonstration of the new Wacom Intuos 5 Tablet. I didn’t need any convincing since I have been using a medium size Wacom Intuos 5 tablet since Christmastime. Wacom Tablets have been part of my workflow in Photoshop and also Corel Painter for the past 5 years.

When Wacom introduced the new Intuos 5 pen tablet, I was thinking –“what does it do that my Intuos 4 doesn’t do?”. TOUCH.. If you have an iPad or an iPhone, you have probably gotten used to Touch to scroll, zoom, rotate, etc.. Now the Intuos 5 tablet gives you the same capability. My mouse sits up on the shelf above so my wife can grab it and use a mouse (she doesn’t have an iPad or iPhone or really now how to use Touch capabilities yet). I never use the mouse and I believe the movements are much more ergonomical than using a mouse.

The pen is functional with Lightroom when you are using the brush and feels much more natural than try to paint areas with a mouse.

The Express Keys and the Radial menu can be set up to different expressions depending on the software and makes workflow so much quicker by clicking on the pen or the Express keys or using the Radial menu than even using the shortcut keys. For most things, your hand doesn’t have to leave the tablet and go back to the keyboard.

I learned that one of the differences between the cheaper Bamboo tablets from Wacom and the Intuos (besides sensitivity) is that the Bamboo cannot be customized differently for different software.. Big plus for the Wacom.

What size do you need? Well, I have used up to the large, but now have the medium and think that for almost all photographers, this is the perfect size. Less real estate on your desk, too.

Gary at Hunt’s Photo is have a special on the Wacom Intuos tablets through the end of March. But you have to go to Insivity site to access the specials..

Oh, there is a wireless kit you can get extra (Wacom Wireless Accessory Kit) to cut the cord and have your tablet wire free.. Only $49.99 extra.. Definitely worth it..

Stayed tuned, I have more gear to tell you about over the next little bit…
