Smokies Fall Color Report October 18, 2012

Yesterday I was out early and shooting along the Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains NP. The color along the Parkway is gorgeous. The maples and hickories and gums and some oaks are really changing color. And the color doesn’t appear to be dull or washed out. I went as far as south of Look Rock. Then I headed back and decided to go up Tremont to scout a little there. Going through Townsend does not give you a feel for what the color is like up on Foothills Parkway or going up Tremont. There are so many places to stop while going up Tremont road, it is hard to decide. Numerous waterfalls, great color, reflections of color in the water.

I shot this image at a pull off that looks east/ southeast over the mountains. The backlighting just after sunrise really made this tree pop.

Along the Foothills Parkway this maple jumped right in front of me. Or that’s the way it felt. It was so beautiful, that I had to pull off the side of the road and spend some time shooting it. My motto is, “If you see something worth shooting, stop and shoot it. Don’t ever say, I will come back later.” It is all about the light and the subject. There is never any guarantee that the light and subject will ever be that way again..

Up at the end of the road in Tremont, just before the turn around, is a great place to look down on the stream and frame up the fall colors.

And this is a 5 image HDR of the same spot, in horizontal.

More to come later.
