Great Smoky Mountains – Fall Color Report 10/11/2012

Oconaluftee Overlook, Great Smoky Mountains NP

With the low for the TN Valley predicted to be around 40° F, I decided to head up toward Clingman’s Dome again. When I got to Newfound Gap, the temperature was still about 37°F, so I decided to keep going to the Oconaluftee Overlook. Got there sooner than all the way up to Clingman’s and nice color in the sky. I was hoping for hoar frost up high, but didn’t see any anywhere. Color is changing nicely up around Newfound Gap but Beech Ridge on the NC side still has a ways to go (maybe about 7 days or longer before peak).

As I was coming back down, I decided to make a swing through Roaring Fork Motor Drive. The colors weren’t changing as much as I would have liked, so I turned around at Bud Ogle Cabin instead of following the 10mph leaf peeper in front of me.

Color is coming along the Little River. Still about a week from peak, but you can find good color to shoot in reflections in the river.

I will be making a big loop on Saturday to include Foothills Parkway, the Dragon and then back up and over Cherohala Skyway.. Look for update Sunday..

    HI BILL,
YOUR BOOK ON THE SMOKY’S HAS SERVED ME WELL FOR MANY YEARS AND I AM DEEPLY GRATEFUL FOR EVERYTHING YOU PUT INTO IT. IT HAS FILLED ME WITH COUNTLESS HOURS BOTH FALL AND SPRING WITH COPIOUS IMAGES THAT HAVE ENRICHED MY LIFE AND I HAVE SHARED WITH OTHERS. THAT INCLUDES ABOUT 20 TRIPS FROM OUR HOME IN CALIFORNIA TO THE SMOKY’S IN THE LAST 10 YEARS, TO PHOTOGRAPH AND INTRODUCE OTHERS TO THE WONDER OF NATURE. IN FACT ONE YEAR ON MY RETURN HOME I MET AND BRIEFLY TALKED TO YOU AT NASHVILLE AIRPORT AS YOU WERE PREPARING YOUR FILM FROM THE SCANNERS. YOU WERE ON YOUR WAY TO ZION IN UTAH.
WELL I AM RETURNING TO THE SMOKEY’S OCT. 20TH FOR MORE INSPIRATION. MY FRIEND FRANK WAY SAID YOU HAVE A FALL REPORT ON COLOR SO I GOT ONTO YOUR WEBSITE TO VISIT. THANKS A MILLION FOR DOING THIS, AND FOR SHARING YOUR GIFTS WITH EVERYONE ELSE!!! BEST, RITA GRAY2@GMAIL.COM
HOPE TO RUN INTO YOU AGAIN, IN THE SMOKEY’S MY FAVORITE PLACE!

Thanks Rita, I will be teaching a workshop over the weekend of the 18-21, so you might see us. The color looks like it is going to be really good this year, I’m glad you are going to get to come and enjoy.
